KMSS and other organizations call 12-hour Nalbari district bandh

NALBARI/GUWAHATI, July 6: A group of youth Congress workers physically assaulted the general secretary of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity (KMSS), Akhil Gogoi, at Dharmapur LAC in Nalbari district on Friday evening. Akhil was admitted to Swahid Mukunda Kakati Civil Hospital in Nalbari.

Protesting the assault on Akhil, the Nalbari district unit of the KMSS called a 12-hour district bandh tomorrow. KMSS activists also staged protest programmes in Jorhat, Nalbari, Barpeta, Baska and Golaghat.

Sources informed that a group of youth Congress leaders had beaten up Akhil at Purni village under Belsor police station at around 3:30 this evening after he visited the flood affected areas under Dharmapur LAC in Nalbari district on Friday. Akhil received serious injuries, especially on his head, sources added.

Doctors of the civil hospital, however, told The Sentinel that Gogoi is out of danger now. KMSS workers and police admitted Akhil to the Swahid Mukunda Kakati Civil Hospital and he is in the hospital till the time of filling this report.

Talking to The Sentinel, Akhil said that six Youth Congress leaders who were waiting in a road side corner of Purni village pulled him out of the Indica car when he reached the area. “After pulling me out of the car, they beat me up with lathis,” Akhil added.

Akhil Gogoi had even identified the six Youth Congress leaders who attacked him. They are Raju Barman, Tapan Barman, Ratul Ali, Khalilur Rahman, Bhuban Deka and Dharmapur LAC youth Congress president Ratul Patowary. The KMSS general secretary even claimed that Assam Agriculture Minister, Nilomoni Sen Deka, was involved in the incident.

Nalbari Superintendent of Police Abu Suphiyan said that investigation was going on and the culprits would be arrested shortly. Meanwhile, the KMSS activists also staged protests in Guwahati to protest the attack on Akhil Gogoi and gave a 12-hour deadline to arrest the culprits.
