Sri Krishna Kumar Chatterjee, human rights defender, associated with Human Rights Law Network in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, was attacked by miscreants who wanted to avenge Sri Chatterjee for helping a person in defending his rights from these miscreants. Krishna Kumar Chatterjee was brutally assaulted and needed to be rescued by the officers of the Bhangore Police Station from a local club where he had been forcefully detained. However, after such rescue the police did not arrange for his medical treatment or arrest the miscreants, the police instead arraigned Krishna Kumar Chatterjee in a criminal proceeding and detained him at the police station. Amongst other offences, Sri Chatterjee was implicated under Sections 3 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act for allegedly carrying “Bombs”.
On the other hand, there has been no step taken by the police on the basis of the letter of complaint submitted to the same police station narrating the incidents on behalf of Sri Chatterjee.
Today, that is on 13.10.2014 members of HRLN moved for bail on behalf of Sri Krishna Kumar Chatterjee when he was produced before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate at Baruipur, South 24 Parganas, however, the prayer for bail was cancelled. Bail application will be moved again before the District Sessions Judge.
This is a grave situation which reveals the vulnerability of all human rights defenders, and we should take urgent notice of this incident and seek justice for him.
