A State Level Consultation on Corporate Loot of Natural Resources

Violation of PESA norms and Displacement of Traditional Communities and Defending the Defenders.

The consultation attended by around 65 persons coming from diverse human rights and progressive political groups such as PPSS, SATARKA, Save Line, Progressive Lawyers Association, AICCTU , CPI (ML) etc provided a platform for convergence of concerns meriting immediate attention in order to launch a concerted struggle against the excesses of the state. It brought to fore a diversity of issues and challenges underpinning the agitations revolving around Corporate Loot of Natural Resources and consequent displacement, Violation of Panchayat Extension to Scheduled Areas Act (PESA) norms in tribal areas for acquiring forest land, Human Rights abuses in the State of Odisha. The strategy and tactics needed to be adopted by different civil society groups to uphold the rule of law through better coordination was worked out. The forceful land acquisition by POSCO in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha by violating forest rights was criticized severely by many participants.

Lower Suktel Project in Bolangir district of Odisha got highlighted through the interaction in meeting and was followed by fact finding and PIL on the issue by HRLN unit of Odisha.
